Is is the thing that's Iro or are we Iro?

In other words, does something that wasn't Iro at one time become Iro in another time and place?

For example, Nirvana. They seemed sincere and important back in the early 90's. But I feel compelled to listen to them now with a sense of irony, even while I still like the music.

Iro is a rhetorical device and depends on the intention of the person doing the speaking/using/listening/wearing. So nothing is inherently iro.
